Requirements

The main goal of this project is to address whether Moodle is capable of providing the functionality and facilities to meet the requirements of the chosen school. This chapter documents how the requirements for LPS Schools Moodle were captured, the actual requirements generated via these methods and those deemed core to the project.

User Groups from which Requirements were captured and Methods used

Technical Staff

The current technical staff within the school will be responsible for the system after the completion of this projects lifecycle. Therefore it was important that their requirements were addressed. The technical staff were also responsible for outlining different user classes and what functionality should be available to each class of user. As the school only has two technical staff, the requirements were gathered by a single interview with follow up questions as required. This technique allowed prompt discussion and clarification to take place.

Teaching Staff

Teachers from LPS School were asked to contribute their views on what they would like to be able to do and what they would require from a Virtual Learning Environment to be able and willing to use it. Due to the fact that the vast majority of teachers were unavailable for comment due to work commitments, the primary sources for the requirements were the Information Communication Technology teaching staff. Again semi structured interviews were used to gather the maximum amount of data over a short period and to avoid taking up too much of the teachers’ time.

Students from LPS

Student requirements were captured via a questionnaire given out during ICT lessons. The questionnaire was used as it allowed quantitative data to be collected quickly and filling out the questionnaires during a lesson meant that the return rate was very high.
